Jika Majika

Ifykyk, it was a South African youth dance show in the late 2000’s, it was about the best of Mzansi dance styles, and showing off your skills through a dance. Like our very own weekly version of Step Up. Everyone in the country tuned in for that, since people were repping their streets, and neighbourhoods to boasts who’s got the best moves. South Africans loooooooove dancing, we dance through joy, pain, marches, funerals, we just love to move. We even dance on the football pitch, as you would have already seen it with Bafana Bafana’s celebration after Simpiwe Tshabala’s brilliant goal during the 2010 World Cup, it’s so bad at some point Bafana even danced when they were not supposed to, when they miscalculated the points after thinking they qualified for the Afcon meanwhile they lost out. So we just keep dancing, and so easily Jika Majika inspired a everyone from school yards, music videos to the football fields, also because most of the guys who were dribblers and showboaters with the ball on the pitch, are like that in real life, flamboyant characters and fosho they can move, with most of them being naturally abo majaivana. It’s different opinion around the world, but here in South Africa we love show boating, it turns the crowd on, be it in intense Soweto derby or playing an international team, we about it.

2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa celebrate their goal vs Mexico.

Even as a much debated topic, showboating brings the crowd, especially in the informal holiday tournament leagues like Phiri Maimane games, and so many, people will flock in thousands to watch an abundance of skills on ibuqu, dusty football pitches in the township. Please don’t feel sorry for us, the dust makes it even lovelier, our very own Roland Garros but with the passion levels of Nascar. Though showboating does cause a lot of controversy like the incident of Sipho Moeti received a yellow card for showboating during a game.

Turn the music on, said the commentator during the Philly Games match between Isithembiso and Phanda Phanda, when Isithembiso players decide to give the ball away and lay down as if to take a nap. The country was split between views, but this playlist is for those who love FIFA streets and enjoy for those who just want to play and chill away.
